Is Your Personal Identification Current?

We don't give much thought to our driver's license beyond cringing at the photo. Chances are we have a few different forms of official identification and we need them for a variety of reasons. Make sure your personal identification is current. Here are some common government issued IDs:

  • Driver's License

  • Passports

  • Military ID

  • Tribal ID

  • Permanent Residence

  • Social Security Card

Based on your situation, you may need to provide more than one form of ID:

  • Work

  • Travel

  • Residency

  • Health Insurance

  • Education

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. You may need to provide one form of identification in order to receive a new required ID.

  2. Keep copies of every official ID in case of an emergency.

  3. Remember when you need to show your ID: traveling, work, traffic stops, bank or loan transactions.

  4. Make sure your IDs are current! If one ID has expired, you can use another form to get through a transaction (ex. a passport for a driver's license). Plus, it is a longer and more painful process to get an ID renewed if it has expired.

  5. Keep your IDs in one place so you aren't searching through drawers and files at the last minute!
