Estate planning for your parents and you may seem natural. But when it's your young adult kids you may get a little squeamish. Personally, it was very difficult to get these documents filled out for my kids. It took a few tries and a steel stomach. Press forward! Being prepared is much better than not being able to help in an emergency. Here are a few items to consider for your young adult's estate planning:
Is your child over 18 years old? Your adult children also need to be prepared for life events. Once they are a legal adult, you will have no ability to help them or have access to their records. They may welcome this! However, getting their estate docs in place will not only secure their future but help the loved ones surrounding them as well.
Make sure you can help them. If your child has an emergency hospital stay or other unexpected event, make sure you (or another loved one) will be able to make decisions for them if they are unable to do it for themselves.
Here's what they need:
Will
Power of Attorney: Financial
Power of Attorney: Health
Funeral Wishes
If it becomes necessary, you may ask that they grant you access to their medical records.
Remember! They need to choose someone they trust to help them with financial and health decisions. Helping your young adults get these documents in order is not an invitation for you to be over-involved with their lives. You are merely protecting their future.
