Understand Your Medical Insurance

Every now and then you walk out your front door, fall, break your ankle in three places, end up in the hospital, can't walk for two months. Or maybe it's just me! Here's a reminder to take a look at your medical insurance just in case a calamity is in your future. My medical billing added up very quickly. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. INSURANCE POLICY: Understand your policy coverage for medical visits and payments. Can a loved one find your insurance cards?

  2. PRESCRIPTIONS: Make sure you understand the dosage, time to be taken, side effects and interactions with other medications and supplements.

  3. VISIT SUMMARIES: Read through your discharge summary for complete understanding. Email or call the office for questions.

  4. CONTACT INFO: Keep a list handy that shows important contacts - doctors, specialists, pharmacy location, caregivers, loved ones, emergency help.

  5. PAYING YOUR BILLS: Make sure when you get your bill that the amount matches up with the amount the insurance quoted. Note the amount and date you paid the bill, and also how you paid it (HSA, FSA, credit card, checking account, etc.). It will test your sanity, but it has to be done!
