We have discussed how to prepare for an evacuation. Let's look closer at the step by step of how you will actually leave your home during an emergency. The news footage showing the chaos of leaving and the aftermath of fires and floods should be motivation for the rest of us to get ourselves ready. Here are some tips to consider for your own emergency preparedness plan.
How much time do you have?
You may or may not have time to gather possessions. Be realistic on timing so you and your loved ones are not put in danger. This includes how to evacuate your animals (inside pets and outside livestock).
Make a list!
What are the most important things to grab? There are essential items (wallet, phone, laptop) and sentimental items (photos or keepsakes). Don't underestimate your "freeze" response which will disable your ability to figure out how to move forward.
Where is it?
There may not be time to run all over the home gathering items. Know the location or consider putting some of the things in one place.
Only trust what you can take with you!
“Fireproof” or “waterproof” are most likely resistant, not proof. (Look at photos of the home remains after a fire. We can assume that some of these people had safekeeping storage devices.) It will be hit and miss to what survives. If you can’t carry it out with you, do not assume it will be preserved.
Are you insured?
Check your insurance policy to make sure your personal property or contents replacement coverage will repair or replace your personal possessions.
